2007 Caribbean Motor-racing Championship

Mark Vieira will lead a star-studded team to represent the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) in Jamaica for the first leg of the 2007 Caribbean Championship on April 8.

Group Three driver, Vieira, accompanied by Group Two drivers Vishok Persaud, Jeremy Pompey, Mohamed Shyraz Roshandin and US-based Guyanese, Kawall Deosaran, will represent Guyana for the first leg of the 2007 Caribbean Championship.

Public Relations Officer of GMR&SC, Brian McIntosh, told Stabroek Sport that they were unsure whether Andrew King would accompany the group to compete because King was experiencing difficulties with his car. He added that King had done well for himself at previous championships.

Stabroek Sport later spoke with King who confirmed that he would not be going to the Jamaica meet.

“I will not be going to the race meet because of business commitments. However I promise to attend the next race meet later down in the year,” he said.

King added that the race cars taking part in the meet had already been shipped to Jamaica. The drivers are scheduled to leave shortly.

Vieira’s Mazda R7, Pompey’s BMW Toyota turbo-charged 4AG, Roshandin’s Toyota GT Starlet, Persaud’s turbo-charged Honda, Deosaran’s Lotus and a Mitsubishi Evolution that will be driven by an unnamed Surinamese who will accompany the drivers to Jamaica have all been shipped to that island.

McIntosh said that Jamaica was very advanced in the sport. Additionally, the locals will have to contend with Jamaican drivers Peter Rae, Peter Moody Jr. and defending Caribbean champion David Sommerbell. However, Vieira said he would be going into the championship with an advantage over Sommerbell because of the wins he got from competing against Sommerbell last October at the South Dakota Circuit. McIntosh said that the drivers are in top shape and are ready for the races.
