Teen further remanded over murder of presidential guard

Magistrate Yohhahnseh Cave on Friday further remanded to prison a teenager accused of murdering a former presidential guard, on his second appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Mortimer Melville, a bus conductor of 93 Prince William Street, Plaisance, and of Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, is accused of murdering former presidential guard Nazir Alli during a robbery.

It is alleged that on August 22, at Better Hope, the teen murdered Alli, 47, who was also a driver of former President Mrs Janet Jagan. Relatives said Alli was shot in a scuffle for his firearm during a robbery at his home. The bandits reportedly took away the weapon. The teen was arrested during raids in Georgetown and was identified as one of the perpetrators.

He was ordered to return to court on October 22.
