A man who allegedly broke into a woman’s home and stole articles worth over $2.7 million was yesterday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
Mark Jones, 29, of 36 North Street, Wortmanville pleaded not guilty to break and enter and larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that between July 19 and 21 at D’urban Street, Jones broke and entered the dwelling house of Cora Elcock and stole a quantity of clothing, kitchen appliances, jewellery, cellular phones, iPods, $74,000 in cash and other items amounting to $2,730,078.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail for Jones saying that a neighbour told Elcock that Jones and others broke into her home. He added that three other persons were already charged. Some of the items, he said, were recovered in Elcock’s yard while others were found with Jones.
Jones told the court that he saw someone put down a bag and he took it. He stated that he later learnt that the woman’s home was broken into and he returned the stuff.
He will return to court on October 18.
