CIOG donates cash, other items to Laing Ave fire victims

The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) on Friday donated $250,000 in cash and other items to the fire-affected residents at Laing Avenue.

CIOG President Fazeel Ferouz said the Muslim community felt compelled to assist after learning of the devastating fire and its impact on the victims. He said in addition to monetary donations clothing, stationery and food items were given to the residents. Ferouz said they intend to monitor the situation and will make more donations in the future.

Ferouz said the assistance is in keeping with the teachings of Islam and the lessons of Ramadan, which ended on Friday. He also said the donation was made possible through contributions from the Muslim Youth Organization of Guyana and the Queenstown Jama Masjid.

Clarisa Anderson, a victim of the fire, said the residents are all grateful for any assistance. She said many homes lost everything including hers.
