Engineer/student remanded on carnal knowledge charge

A 24-year-old man who allegedly had carnal knowledge of a teenaged girl was yesterday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Kevin Anthony Savory, 24, an engineer and student who resides at 1 Public Road, Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the carnal knowledge charge when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that between February 1 and March 31 this year at Georgetown he had carnal knowledge of a girl under 15 years. It was revealed to the court that the girl is 14 years old.

The teen’s father told the court that his daughter had heart surgery last year. He stated that this year he noticed changes and thought she was getting fat and brought it to the attention of her mother. He said they took her to the doctor and found out she was seven months pregnant. He stated that his daughter would have been 13 years old when she was first molested.

Attorney-at-law Haymant Ramdhani represented Savory. He told the court that the teen’s father was making serious allegations of a pregnancy and they were not certain about that. The attorney stated that his client is an engineer and also a student of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) who has one child and is the sole breadwinner of his family.

Ramdhani said his client strongly denies the allegation and does not know anything about the teen’s condition. He requested bail saying that his client would attend his trial.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail saying that it was a serious allegation and there was a likelihood that he would tamper with the witness. He added that there is a medical report to support the teen’s condition and she was indeed seven months pregnant.

The magistrate transferred the case to Court Five for November 1.
