New Barbados envoy accredited

President Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday received Letters of Credence from Barbados High Commissioner to Guyana John Williams at the Office of the President.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) reported that after the ceremony Williams said that he is looking forward to working at the bilateral level with Guyana since a lot needs to be done. “In listening to the meeting that we had today and the contributions that we got, certainly from persons who were explaining to us what the opportunities are by way of investment between Barbados and Guyana, my tenure as Barbados High Commissioner to Guyana has come at a very important time,” he added.

Williams said that efforts continue at the Caricom and multilateral levels but he believes that the two countries can accomplish a lot in areas including agriculture, tourism or sports and culture. He also said he believes that much can be achieved in maritime issues at the bilateral level. “I do look forward to working feverishly over the next number of months to achieve that,” he said.

Williams replaces former Barbados High Commissioner Nigel Barrow. He is also the current Barbados Ambassador to the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and he has served in a number of prestigious posts, including Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Civil Service of Barbados from May 2003 to February 2006; Human Resources Consultant from May 2002 to May 2003 and Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office with direct responsibility for the Immigration Portfolio from 1983 to 1986.
