A 42-year-old man is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) after he was attacked by another man who hit him several times over his head with two bricks.
Sherwin Hodge of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara was rushed to the hospital on Saturday morning after he was pulled off of his bicycle near the Demerara Harbour Bridge on the East Bank Public Road by the man and beaten in the head with bricks.
The man has since been taken into custody and is in the Brickdam Police Station lock-ups.
According to the brother of the man, Allister Hodge, his brother was on his way to do a job when he was attacked. He said a police officer was passing and observed his brother being attacked by the man. Initially the officer thought the two were making a joke until he saw Hodge fall to the ground and he went to the man’s assailant who began to tell him a story which was untrue. At that moment the woman who is now Hodge’s reputed wife was passing in a bus when she observed what was going on and stopped off at the scene. As soon as the man saw her he ran away. He was however subsequently arrested.
The woman told Stabroek News yesterday that she and the assailant severed all ties last September and she later began a relationship with Hodge. She said initially the man, who lives a few villages away from them, left them alone but then he began threatening her. She said he assaulted her once and a report was made at the station about him.
According to her, he has relatives who are in the police force who are shielding him and as such he feels he could do whatever he wants.
Yesterday the relatives of Hodge were praying that he survives although doctors have told them to prepare for the worst.
His brother said that doctors have stated he has swelling and bleeding in his brain. The man is on a life support machine and his relatives are hoping for the best.
