Saint’s teacher succumbs to accident injuries

St Stanislaus College teacher Angelique Mohamed succumbed to the injuries she suffered during an accident on Sunday night.

Twenty-two-year-old Mohammed was a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown hospital. She was unconscious and died at about 11 pm on Wednesday.

Stabroek News understands that Mohammed and her boyfriend were heading to Cummings Lodge on a motorbike sometime after 6 pm when, at the Railway Embankment, Bel Air, her boyfriend attempted to overtake a car and crashed head-on into the back of a truck. Reports are that the driver of the car put on his trafficator to indicate that he was turning too late, and the bike was following close behind when the boyfriend’s evasive action resulted in him crashing into the truck. Mohammed was thrown several feet from the bike.

The woman’s mother, Yvonne Castello Mohamed, had said that her daughter’s boyfriend had sustained bruises about his body and that he was in the Sparendaam Police Station lock-ups. She had said too that he had resuscitated her daughter at the accident scene after she had stopped breathing and that he had helped to get her to the hospital. The mother had said too that the couple was wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Mohamed was the youngest of three children and her death comes six months after that of her father.

Her death adds to the growing carnage on the roads in which 24 persons died in 12 days. This has prompted a raft of new police measures including stiff traffic fines from November 1.
