Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys yesterday fined an overseas-based Guyanese man who admitted to driving under the influence and on the wrong side of the road, $45,000 and revoked his driver’s permit.
Ramkumar Seenarine who submitted an address in Grove as his local address but who indicated that he was living in New York, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and breach of rules of the road when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
According to the facts of the case, on October 25, on the Providence Public Road Seenarine drove motor car number PJJ 783 while he was under the influence of drinks and in such a manner that he was incapable of having proper control of the car. He also admitted to failing to keep to the left and near side of the road while driving on the same road.
His attorney, Hukumchand told the court that his client went out with some friends and had about four to five beers. He said that the man was misdirected which is why the second charge was laid against him. Hukumchand said his client spent the night in police custody.
In handing down the sentence the Magistrate said that persons tend to go to other countries and obey their traffic laws but don’t do the same in their own country.
He fined Seenarine $25,000 on one charge with the alternative of six months imprisonment, and $20,000 on the other charge with the alternative of an additional six months jail.
