City Council urges GWI to stop sludge entering its canals

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) says it is concerned about large amounts of sludge discharged into the Irving and Church streets canals due to operations by the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).

In a press release the Council said the blockage is impeding the flow of water through this channel and it is forcing it to spend more money to keep them clean and flowing.

The Council said last month the Town Clerk dispatched a letter to GWI about the issue seeking compensation and cooperation to desilt the canals as it cannot afford to do so continually. The municipality said it is already hard-pressed to deal with the abundance of garbage dumped indiscriminately into them.

Therefore, it is calling on GWI to take action to prevent slush from being emptied into the city’s canals.
