Wanted man David Leander called David Zammett and ‘Biscuit’ who was allegedly tortured by police while in custody is now a patient at the Georgetown Hospital under heavy police guard.
His hospitalization came shortly after Justice Jainarayan Singh upon seeing his condition on Friday, ordered that he immediately be taken to a doctor of his choice to be examined.
This newspaper understands that the doctor chosen advised that Leander be hospitalized and he was taken to the medical institution late on Friday afternoon.
Prior to Justice Singh’s order, the 28-year-old, Lot 112, Vigilance, East Coast resident had appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, visibly battered and unable to walk, charged with an attempt to commit murder and possession of narcotics. He was remanded to prison and his case adjourned to Thursday at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
As a result of a habeas corpus writ filed by his lawyer Basil Williams in the high court, Leander was taken to that court to see Justice Singh.
This newspaper was told that Leander was unable to exit the police vehicle and as such the judge had to go downstairs to see him.
Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Leander in relation to investigations into the murder of Agriculture Minister Satyadeow Sawh and his siblings; Anson Melville at Friendship on January 11, 2004; William Adams called `Grego’ at Friendship on August 2, 2004; and the attempted murder committed on Randy Joseph at Friendship on October 4, 2004.
He was charged in relation to Joseph and for having 5 grammes of cannabis in possession when he was arrested.
Leander was captured last Tuesday during a joint services operation in Buxton that resulted in the deaths of Noel James called ‘Baby’ who had recently been released from prison after serving a sentence for larceny and Orlando Andrews called ‘Bullet’ who was wanted for a number of murders.
