Rupununi man remanded on incest charge

A 46-year-old Rupununi man was yesterday slapped with an incest charge and remanded to prison for allegedly sleeping with his 15-year-old daughter and causing her to bear his child, who is now 4 months old.

The man appeared in the Georgetown’s Magistrate Court before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle and although he was told that he was not required to plead to the charge he said that the child his daughter bore is his. He was remanded to prison.

He allegedly committed the unlawful act between January last year and February this year in the Central Rupununi.

During the court proceedings the man seemed distant and at one point fought very hard to hold back the tears welling in his eyes.

When the magistrate asked him how many children he had, he counted the child that his daughter allegedly has for him.

The man lives with his wife at the same place where the incident occurred and has nine children with her.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews opposed bail saying that if granted bail the man will be going back into the same house with the complainant.

The matter continues on December 4.
