Sheriff St stabbing

Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded to prison a Campbellville resident accused of stabbing a mini-bus conductor to death on Sunday.

Twenty-nine-year-old Chris Balkaran, of 37 Seaforth Street, was not required to plead to the capital offence when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. Balkaran is accused of murdering Anthony Rogers during an argument on Sheriff Street.

While details of how the incident occurred are sketchy, reports are that Rogers was outside a Sheriff Street business place when he was stabbed at about 4 am. He fell to the ground and was left there until police arrived. He was then transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Prior to the incident Rogers had gone out with his wife and after taking her home he left, saying that he was going out. Reports are that he usually went drinking on Saturday nights.

Attorney-at-law Mischka Puran, who entered an appearance for Balkaran in association with Vic Puran, said that he is a taxi driver and a father of one. She asked the court for an early trial date.

The matter continues in Court Three on November 23.
