Evening News editor dies

The Editor of the Evening News, Anthony Downes, died suddenly yesterday morning of a suspected heart attack.

A press release from the Evening News Company Limited and Vieira Communications Company Limited said Downes became the editor of the newscast in January, notwithstanding that he hadn’t any experience in news gathering. The release said Downes’ “vast experience in management and his exceptionally good knowledge of the current issues in the country made him a very valued Editor for the Evening News.”

Before joining the company, Downes was an Administrative Manager at the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s Uitvlugt Sugar Estate. The Evening News and Vieira Communications extended their deepest sympathy to Downes’ relatives.
