Teenage ‘goldsmith’ gets two years for stealing jewellery

Magistrate Fazil Azeez yesterday sentenced a teenage “goldsmith” who admitted that he conned persons of their jewellery, to two years imprisonment when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

Daniel Singh, 18, of 20 Middle Street, Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara (WCD) admitted to two charges of fraudulent conversion when he appeared at court.

According to the facts of the case, on October 27, at Zeeburg, WCD, being entrusted solely with a gold chain valued $30,000 by Amir Khan, in order that he may clean same, Singh fraudulently converted it to his own use and benefit.

Additionally, on the same day, at Vreed-en-Hoop, being entrusted solely with five gold finger rings worth $49,000 in order that he may clean same, Singh fraudulently converted them to his own use and benefit, the property of Fazeela Khan.

In explaining his actions, Singh said he was a “goldsmith” and that the virtual complainants had given him the jewellery to clean but he didn’t have the “strong solution” and had taken it to a friend to clean. He said he and the friend later went out and when he called for the items the next day, the friend told him that he was in Bartica. He said that the friend kept telling him to return “tomorrow tomorrow” but he never got back the items.

Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue told the court that Singh had previously appeared at court in connection with similar matters and was a “regular.”

After listening to them, the magistrate sentenced Singh to two years imprisonment on each charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
