Confessed ganja trafficker draws four-year jail term

A man was yesterday sentenced to four years in prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton together with a fine of $100,000 after he admitted having had over 200 grammes of cannabis concealed in his travelling bag when he stopped at the Bartica Police Station for a routine check.

Junior Griffith pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking in narcotics when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Griffith on November 21 at the Bartica Police Station had 211.5 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

After the charge with read, he admitted to the offence without hesitation.

The facts are that around 1 pm, motor pickup GKK 1772 stopped at the station for a routine check on its way to Arinu Backdam. The vehicle had five passengers including the defendant. Police searched Griffith’s bag and discovered the drugs. He was told of the offence and cautioned and admitted saying that he was carrying the cannabis to Arinu Backdam to do a “side hussle”.

Before sentencing him, the magistrate asked Griffith if he had anything to say in relation to the offence he committed and he replied in the negative.
