Young lawyer receives Cameron and Shepherd Prize 2007

Sohan Jaikaran Poonai left the Hugh Wooding Law School as its best graduating student for 2007.

Above Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran, senior partner of Cameron and Shepherd, handed over the Cameron and Shepherd Prize on Thursday for his exemplary performance in the courses Civil Practice and Procedure I and II.

The Cameron and Shepherd Prize is offered each year to the best performing Guyanese student in Civil Practice and Procedure in order to promote academic excellence in this subject.

The winner of each Cameron and Shepherd prize is presented with a volume of the Common Law Library. A release from the legal firm said that these books, which have been described as “an essential part of the litigator’s library,” have assisted and guided all the lawyers who have been members of Cameron and Shepherd in their daily work since 1901, when the partnership was established.

Poonai, the sixth winner of the Cameron and Shepherd prize, and the first male to have won it, chose Bowstead and Reynolds on Agency. Now in its 18th edition published in 2006, this book was first published in 1896.

The release said that Poonai had already appeared in litigation against Cameron and Shepherd and they had been impressed with his enthusiasm, diligence and thorough preparation. Looking on are other partners and staff of Cameron and Shepherd.
