GT&T plugs new Canal tower

As the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company continues with its quest to provide quality coverage, a 200-foot cellular tower was last week ‘powered up’ at Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara.

During a tour of the new facility yesterday, GT&T’s Marketing Director, Wystan Robertson told the media that the site was the second in two weeks that the company activated. The other tower was in Linden. He declared that the Canal area was “particularly special” as it was in this area that the company had started off with its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) system.

The new cellular tower will service Canals One and Two, La Grange and surrounding communities. Robertson said that the sites are constructed to ensure that they can stand the test of time with the cost being in the region of US$250,000.

He declared that land acquisition had been a problem as a suitable site had to be acquired. Noting that cellular towers across the West Demerara and East Bank Essequibo ensured that there was always coverage, he said that the telephone company would look at addressing gaps in coverage in some areas.

The marketing director noted that “work always continues” and the company was also working on other sites, notably a 400 feet tower at Mahdia, which he said would be activated by the end of the year.
