Different fates for teens accused of grabbing phones

Three teenaged boys appeared in court yesterday charged with snatching cellular phones and two were remanded into police custody by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle while the other was placed on a two-year bond after the virtual complainant opted not to give evidence.

The first case involved a 15-year-old Festival City resident who is accused of snatching a woman’s phone out of her hand as she was about to use it.

The lad who had no relative in court and who was unrepresented denied the simple larceny charge and was remanded by the magistrate.

It is alleged that on Saturday at Robb Street, he robbed Uma Singh of one Motorola cell phone valued $53,000.

Singh who was present in court said that she was walking and took the phone out of her bag to use it. She said that the teen who was coming in the opposite direction snatched the phone and ran.

The woman said that her boyfriend who was with her gave chase and the next time she saw him, the police had the teen and her phone.

The lad when asked by the magistrate denied snatching the woman’s phone. He will return to Court Six on Friday.

Next, a 15-year-old Albouystown boy appeared before the same magistrate charged with simple larceny.

It is alleged that on Saturday at Regent Street he stole one Motorola cell phone valued $35,000 from Anzar Nazurdeen.

The prosecutor told the court that the phone was recovered and is at present at the Brickdam Police Station. He will also return to Court Six on Friday.

And a 16-year-old Agricola youth was spared after the complainant told the court that she did not want to give evidence against him.

It is alleged that on Friday, he stole one cell phone valued $35,000 from Odessa Clarke.

The lad’s mother was present in court.

The magistrate later placed him on two-year bond to keep the peace.
