Businessman accused of assaulting boys again refused bail

One of the lawyers representing city businessman Kevin Jordan, who is charged with four counts of buggery, made a lengthy bail application on Monday citing old cases of a similar nature but when the case was called again yesterday Magistrate Oneidge Walrond-Allicock opted to refuse bail once again.

When the matter was called on Monday afternoon, attorney-at-law Neil Boston made an application for bail arguing that it was ‘wicked’ for the police to say that there are more charges to be laid against his client. He called on the magistrate to exercise her discretion as it related to bail.

Prosecutor Hugh Winter spoke of the gravity and seriousness of the offences that Jordan was facing. He asked the court for bail to be further refused.

After listening to both sides the magistrate adjourned the matter to the following day so that she could review the application and make a decision.

Yesterday she refused bail. Among the grounds she based her decision on was the fact that Jordan was charged with four matters which were all of a sexual nature, he has three pending charges, the offences were all committed against children of the same sex, he is wealthy and could easily get another passport and Guyana’s borders are unmanned.

The matter was then fixed for December 7 for the commencement of the preliminary inquiry.

When Jordan arrived at court he was mocked by spectators but the situation was not as bad as when he made his first court appearance last month when hundreds of persons flocked the court. The other counsel representing him is Joseph Harmon.

Jordan, 48-year-old resident of Lot 524 Republic Park, East Bank Demerara and the owner of Jordan’s Spare Parts at High and Broad Streets is charged with buggering four boys between the ages of six and eight years old.

It is alleged that he committed the acts on November 7 and on November 2 at his business place.

The allegations surfaced early last month when a seven-year-old student of a primary school located a short distance from Jordan’s business place complained of a pain in his rear. Checks revealed blood and when the child was questioned, he reportedly implicated the businessman. Subsequently, the other boys came forward also alleging that Jordan had committed sexual acts on them during the school’s lunch period at his business place.

Jordan was initially arrested and released on station bail.

Seven witnesses are to testify against Jordan.
