Police nab South Ruimveldt robbers after shoot-out

Two men are in police custody but a third fled during a shoot-out with the police following a home invasion in South Ruimveldt.

According to reports just around 10:35 am yesterday two men and a third acting as a lookout broke into a house at Lot 358 Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt. At the time a 14-year-old girl was home alone when the men broke into the house via the back door.

The girl’s elder brother, Dwayne Matthias, said he was at work when he received a call saying that two men were trying to break into his home.

According to Matthias his sister was in her bedroom sleeping when she heard a loud rocking on the door. He said she then went to the door and saw a large crack in it and the door knob being turned forcefully as if someone was trying to break into the house.

He added that his sister then asked who was there. After getting no response, Matthias said his sister peeked through a window and saw two men, one masked, trying to break the lock on the door. Fearing for her life she ran back into her bedroom with the telephone and locked herself in. According to Matthias his sister then contacted a friend who alerted the police and her father. He added that after the telephone rang and the men heard someone answering it, they turned their attention to the bedroom and stared to hit on the door asking who was hiding in there. By that time, Matthias said, the police had arrived at the house along with his father and himself.

“After they heard the sirens and they saw the vehicles, one on a motorcycle rode away and my father and another one ended up in a scuffle,” Matthias recalled. He added that the police then gave chase behind the other man and gunshots were heard. The two were arrested unharmed and taken to the East La Penitence Police Station.

Meanwhile, a police source said they have since recovered a flat screen computer and pieces of gold jewellery. Investigations are ongoing.
