Brazilian on weapons charge remanded

Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan yesterday denied bail to a Brazilian man who police allegedly found with a gun and ammunition in his possession.

According to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court report, Jefferson Da Silva, 24, of Rua Estace Melo Jarden Floresta, Brazil, pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court to answer to two charges of unlawful possession.

Da Silva, on December 29 at Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, allegedly had in his possession one 9 mm pistol and five 9mm rounds without being the holder of a firearm licence. The police were reportedly on patrol in the area when they searched Da Silva and found the weapon tucked into the waistband of his pants.

Da Silva was ordered to appear at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on March 15.
