Towns project, Tucville cesspool among $268M contracts

Government is to pump more than $29 million into the local government and regional development community service enhancement project to convert three regions to towns.

Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon at his first post Cabinet briefing for this year said the contract was green-lighted and the funds would be used for a consultancy for the township transition plans for Regions Two, Three and Seven.

Additionally, a contract valued almost $97 million received Cabinet’s nod of approval for the construction of the Tucville sewage receiving station under the Georgetown Water Supply and Sewerage Programme 2. On July 17, last year, a five-year-old girl, Briana Dover, became stuck in the Tucville cesspool and drowned despite the heroic efforts of a nearby resident, Orduck Reid. The Guyana Water Inc had announced some days later that it would rehabilitate the existing structure and reopen it for use by private waste disposal companies and to serve some 800 homes.

Luncheon said, too, approximately 200 metres of sea defence at Crane, West Coast Demerara, Region Three is slated to be constructed under a $96.9 million contract which has also won Cabinet’s no-objection.

Government also intends to acquire uniforms for the Guyana Police Force through a $45.5 million contract.
