Timber producers say able to meet needs of local businesses

The Forest Products Association of Guyana (FPA) says that it is able to meet the demands of the local businesses which expressed concern that they are unable to obtain supplies of lumber for their businesses.

In an advertisement in the press, the FPA said: “Mem-bers would like to advise that they are willing to make available to all producers reliable supplies of logs and lumber at agreed payment/delivery terms.”

It said that requests should be submitted to the FPA which will facilitate discussions between members and manufacturers in ensuring that the requirements are met.

Furniture manufacturers, including Precision Wood-working Limited recently complained of having to import wood for their operations and they blamed this on the heavy exportation of logs by large multinational corporations.

One new company, Sus-tainable Forest Inc. said that all the lumber harvested from its concession will be locally processed and will be sold to local manufacturers, who said that prices on the local market far exceed what they pay for lumber from overseas sellers.
