Three Essequibo residents who stole a bull and were later caught currying it in a large carahi at Windsor Castle were yesterday sentenced to a total of eight years in prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.
Mohan Lall, 47, of Windsor Castle, Essequibo Coast will serve three years; Latchman called `Doodie’, 40, of Lot 150 Public Road, Hampton Court Essequibo will also serve three years; and Bibi Mohamed, 38, was sentenced to two years in prison. Latchman and Mohamed are husband and wife. The three defendants pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny of cattle.
Between January 29 and 30 the trio stole one bull valued $85,000 belonging to Ganesh Persaud.
The facts are that on January 29 around 10 am, Persaud tied the bull in a pasture to graze. When he made checks the following day, the bull was missing. Persaud subsequently reported the matter to the police who acting on information went to a house in Windsor Forest. The three defendants were seen cooking meat and liver in a large carahi. They were questioned and admitted that they had stolen Persaud’s bull. They were later arrested and charged.
Mohanlall cleans trenches in the backdam, while Latchman is a rice farmer and his wife is a housewife as well as a domestic worker.
As the magistrate was dealing with the case, a young woman who said that Latchman and Mohamed are her parents jumped up and shouted that it was Lall who was the mastermind behind the theft.
She was instructed to sit and less than five minutes later she jumped up and shouted again.
The magistrate ordered that she be escorted out of the courtroom by the police.
The young woman burst into tears when she later saw her parents.
