Accused in motorcycle break-in beaten unconscious by accusers -court hears

A 44-year-old man was on Thursday released on $30,000 bail on a break and enter charge after telling the court that he was beaten unconscious by persons who accused him of stealing over $362,000 worth of articles from a motorcycle store.

Denny Hunte, called Shawn, of 106 Smyth Street, Georgetown denied the charge and Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle granted him his pre-trial liberty. It is alleged that between January 4 and 26, Hunte broke and entered the Kanuo Motorcycle Store and stole three black tanks, a quantity of computer parts and other articles, together valued $362,000.

He told the court that on Monday, he was confronted by the person in charge of the store and three others who beat him badly. Denny stated that he was once employed at the store.

The man who complained of having wounds all over his body as a result of the beating said that when he woke up he was in the Brickdam Police Station lockups. He was later called to the bench where he showed the magistrate his wounds.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews asked that bail to be refused owing to the seriousness of the offence and the likelihood that he would not return to court.

Matthews stated also that two of the black tanks were recovered. After reportedly stealing them, Hunte sold them someone living in his area for $1,000. In relation to Hunte’s claims of brutality, Matthews said he had not been informed about the matter but it will be investigated.

Hunte has to return to Court Three on March 5.
