Sport Letter…

Dear Editor,

The idea that our senior athletes are running away with at this point in time, is that coaches in Guyana, in particular athletic coaches, are expected to create miracles.

Senior athletes must not seek to blame coaches unfairly for their short-comings on and off the track as it relates to their general inability to learn and develop themselves in an optimum manner.

Coaches can only work with the material available (athletes) which most times comes from adverse family situations. To make matters even worse coaches are not even paid for their services, at least not in athletics.

We as athletic coaches also have family commitments and some financial consideration should be looked at for us by the relevant persons in charge.

My advice to young talented athletes is to work hard at school and play hard at sports, it is the only avenue to realizing your true potential in reaching the top of the sport, and to senior athletes who are obsessed with the sport, it is not the coaches’ fault you weren’t able to reach the top of your sport, it was your inability to learn from sound coaching practice.

Yours faithfully,

Wayne Walcott
