Couple remanded on cocaine, ganja charge

A woman and her reputed husband who allegedly had large amounts of cocaine and cannabis in their possession at a hinterland location were yesterday refused bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

Itasha Frank, 27, of 147 South Ruimveldt and Rory Charles, 28, of Canje Pheasant Lane, South Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to a charge of joint possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Frank also pleaded not guilty to another trafficking charge at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on February 28 at Kurupung Landing, Middle Mazaruni the two had 85.3 grammes of cocaine for trafficking. Also on the same date Frank is alleged to have had in her possession 358 grammes of cannabis for trafficking.

Frank with tears rolling down her cheeks tried to explain the matter to the magistrate. She pointed to Charles as he was being led from the courtroom and said, “he is not in anything, me ent want go to Berbice tomorrow.” (The prison for female convicts is in New Amsterdam, Berbice.)

Their case was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for March 20.
