Man robbed uncle of over $1.3M six years ago – court hears

A man who allegedly robbed his uncle of over $1.3 million in jewellery and other items six years ago was yesterday granted $75,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

Troy Greene, 26, of 64 Howes Street, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to break and enter and larceny at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on March 6, 2001 at Kitty, he broke and entered the dwelling of Shane Small, his uncle, and stole a quantity of jewellery valued $1.2 million, two wristwatches, one cellular phone, one Walkman tape, one sweater, one school bag and $65,000, all to a total value of $1,391,000.

Attorney-at-law Sonny Sarwan represented Greene and told the court that his client lives with his mother and he is a vendor in the market. He stated that it is an old matter and the complainant is Greene’s uncle. Greene, he said, has always lived in the country. He added that his client is not a flight risk and the incident is part of a family dispute which he wished not to get into.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews did not object to bail but stated that Small indicated to them that Greene had left the country for Cayenne, French Guiana and only returned last Sunday.

His case was transferred to Court Three for April 24.
