The Rotaract Club of Georgetown is celebrating world Rotaract Week with an entrepreneurial project, an international fair and a roster of other activities.
In a press release, the club said it will also be celebrating 39 years of service under the theme ‘one purpose with one voice’ and the observances started on Tuesday with an exhibition at the National Library. Today the club will visit its sponsoring Rotary Club Meeting at Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel at 12 pm; tomorrow it plans to do an entrepreneurial project at the Demlife Building at 6.30 pm; on Friday the club will host its 19th Annual District Disaster Torch Walk from Parliament building at 5 pm; on Saturday it will host an international fair at the Guyana Red Cross Building from 6 pm and a church service, at the St George’s Cathedral is planned for Sunday at 8 am as well as the launching of the ‘Disaster Box’ at the airport at 10 am.
The club said it has undertaken several service projects for which it has been recognised both locally and internationally. These projects include programmes on literacy, youth exchanges and student scholarships, HIV/AIDS education and support, medical outreaches as well as donations of hampers to flood victims and care for the elderly.
Rotaract is an international programme for adults age 18 to 30 who are service minded. Rotary International, an association of Rotary Clubs made up of service-minded business and professional leaders, was founded on March 13, 1968. The first chartered club was the Rotaract Club of North Carolina and today there are more than 8000 Rotary-sponsored Rotaract clubs with about 176,000 members or Rotaractors in 176 countries. The clubs are based in the community or in a university.
The Georgetown club said it is part of District 7030 which expands from St Kitts to French Guiana. The District comprises 32 clubs in 14 countries.
