Around $2M was stolen in deadly ambush

The two persons who have been detained by police in relation to the deadly ambush of a MMC vehicle at the Sheribana Bridge on Monday last are still in custody and just around $2M was stolen.

Two MMC guards – Warren Hutson and Rodwell Clarke – were killed in the attack and two others injured.

According to a police source, in addition to the detention of the two men – one from Linden and another from Buxton – several other persons were also taken in for questioning and were subsequently released.

Stabroek News was told that investigators are in receipt of the names of several other suspects who they say they have not yet been able to locate. As it relates to the ballistics results on the shells that were picked up at the crime scene a source said that from looking at the shells one can say that they were fired from AK-47 assault rifles however they are awaiting confirmation.

Meanwhile, a source from MMC has confirmed that during Monday’s attack the bandits fled with in excess of $2M. The police yesterday said that a post-mortem on Hutson by pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh showed that the cause of death was shock and haemorrhage as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Around noon on Monday, a MMC 4×4 vehicle which was escorting cash to the city was attacked by the gunmen at a ditch on the road. MMC Chief Executive Officer Carl Morgan had told Stabroek News that the MMC constables had just uplifted canisters with cash from the company’s ferry location when the incident occurred.
