Robbery suspect shot thrice by police in arrest bid

Police at about 8.30 am on Wednesday shot a man in his right forearm and left hand during efforts to arrest him at Castle Street, Republic Park, East Bank Demerara.

The man is alleged to have robbed a woman of cash and a cell phone on October 2, 2007, Police stated last evening in a press release.

According to Police, a woman, 52 years old, who works as a domestic at a residence in Republic Park, was reportedly robbed of cash and jewellery at Republic Park on October 2, 2007.

Police said that she saw suspect Compton Codrington, 24 years of Mocha, in Republic Park yesterday and pointed him out to an armed police rank. The release said that in efforts to arrest Codrington, a scuffle ensued between the police rank and Codrington who attempted to disarm the police rank and was shot twice in his right forearm and once in his left hand.

Police reported that Codrington is in police custody and was taken to the GPHC for medical treatment where he is under guard.
