Why can’t applicants at the Rupununi to join the army be interviewed there like before

Dear Editor,

On a recent visit to the Rupununi, the president stated that the army needs recruits from the Rupununi.

Well, an enquiry a few days ago at the Lethem Barracks indicated otherwise. The information being forwarded is that persons interested in joining the army need to travel to Georgetown to make an application. They claim that no applications are being processed from the Rupununi and that interested individuals need to travel to Georgetown.

This procedure is completely different from previous recruitments where everything was done in the Rupununi.

Most interested persons from the Rupununi find the cost of this new procedure prohibitive and wonder why it was instituted. It is extremely expensive to have to travel to Georgetown, pay for accomodation and meals simply to confirm whether your application has been accepted or denied.

Why can’t the army continue its previous recruitment system of processing applications in the Rupununi? It is sincerely hoped that reconsideration can be given to the new process of recruitment so that persons from the Rupununi who are interested in serving their country through the army can be given an equal opportunity.

Yours faithfully,
