Some teachers continue to exploit students

Dear Editor,

It is shameful that some teachers and schools are still trying to exploit children and their parents by illegally imposing such things as contingency fees and charging for other things such as for entry to schools or for sitting examinations.

This is exploitation of people who are making use of the opportunities being provided by the government to have their children educated and for which a massive allocation of $ 17 billion has been made from the national budget.

The Minister of Education Mr Shaik Baksh and his ministry have moved rapidly to deal with this unconscionable exploitation of students and have also advised parents not to make such payments and also to report such incidents to the Ministry of Education or to the Regional Education Officers.

It is good that this dishonest activity has been brought to light and that action is being taken to stamp it out.

Yours faithfully,

A Hackette
