The bicentenary of the end of Britain’s part in the slave trade

Dear Editor,

Some months ago Dr. Ralph Gonsalves the St. Vincent Prime Minister suggested that Britain should make reparation for its role in the slave trade. There were criticisms of this suggestion by many Guyanese and Jamaicans writing in the Jamaica Gleaner actually blaming African Kings and Chiefs and not Britain for the trade and slaves.

I enclose articles from the Guardian and Sunday Times to show the role Britain will play on the Bicentenary on March 24th I will be watching to see what plans the Guyana Government has for the celebration.

Dr. Jagan when he was Premier in 1957 gave Afro Guyanese Government workers a holiday to celebrate Ghana’s Independence in March of that year.

I hope the present government can make a similar gesture on March 24th.

Yours faithfully,

F.A. Neblett
