I am prouder to be a Guyanese upon reading that the UWI St. Augustine, faculty of humanities and education is hosting a special retirement conference in honour of a distinguished and eminently qualified son of the soil, Professor Gordon Rohlehr.
Prof. Rohlehr was born in Guyana on 20 February 1942. He was educated at Queen’s College and obtained a first class B.A. Honours degree in literature in English from the university of the West Indies, Mona in 1964.
Thereafter, he left for the University of Birmingham, where he wrote a doctoral thesis entitled ‘Alienation and Commitment in the Works of Joseph Conrad’. He then took up an appointment as a lecturer in English Literature at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.
Mr. Editor, Prof. Rohlehr is credited for a number of initiatives at UWI.
Guyana has been in the news for negative things sometimes. This is definitely a light in the midst of darkness.
Let us all celebrate. Prof. Rohlehr has done all Guyanese proud. I would hope that the Government of Guyana would use this opportunity to show our gratitude to this distinguished son of the soil.
The University of Guyana may consider having Prof. Rohlehr visit to hold talks with students while at the same time having his works on display.
Three cheers for the professor, three cheers for Guyana.
