This accident could have been avoided

Dear Editor,

What a ghastly, horrific bus crash at Linden, with so many dead and injured. To me, this was a preventable accident.

It was distressing to read that the driver of the bus was trying to get past a parked truck, “…….noticed another vehicle heading in his direction…….swerved…….and ended up into the back of the truck.”

Recently, on a day tour in the Caribbean, on the equivalent of a narrow mountain road with hairpin bends, every time the coach approached a bend, the driver honked his horn. The passengers, all from the UK, were not used to this; but we soon appreciated this practice, when, occasionally, we came across a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Perhaps drivers in Guyana could adopt the ‘honking practice’, as a matter of routine, on ‘vulnerable’ routes and in appropriate circumstances, particularly at night. My sympathy to the grieving families and friends.

Yours faithfully,

Geralda Dennison
