Jamaican decision to deport workers could impact on region

Dear Editor,

A ticklish situation lurking around the corner is the new decision by the Jamaican government to have foreign workers show in 10 days their work permits or face deportation as appeared in a Chronicle report dated October 20, 2007.

I am certain that Guyanese and other regional nationals are amongst those in question. I am not saying that they should not comply with the laws of Jamaica, but what happens if other countries within Caricom decide doing the same in retaliation.

Should Caricom choose to ignore the situation it can cause the relationship among Caricom members states and other regional counterparts to be in limbo. We do not need that kind of atmosphere to work in when we are making strides towards regional partnership and development.

Yours faithfully,

T Pemberton
