First past the post is a better system

Dear Editor,

I agree with Jeremy Gravesande’s letter captioned: “Put aside PR and go back to the constituency system” (02.11.17).

I fully agree with the writer. This system will ensure that the MPs have to work for and serve their constituents better, in order to get elected or re-elected.

In Canada, Britain and most other countries, elections at all levels of government are done on the First Past the Post system – the system we had in Guyana before the introduction of PR.

Recently, during the elections in the Canadian province of Ontario, there was a referendum ballot asking voters whether they would like to change the electoral process to that of PR. The electorate rejected the PR system by over 90 percent. They wanted the system to remain as it has been since the existence of Canada – First Past the Post. The system has worked in Canada, hasn’t it?

Yours faithfully,

R. Khan
