Having lived in Guyana a number of years ago and now living back in South Africa, I make a point of searching the web site of the Stabroek at least 4 times a week to keep up with the news. I scan all the pages especially the ‘Letters to the editor.’ I think Zenobia Williams hit the nail on the head when I read her letter (December 27), and I wish people would put themselves in their animals’ shoes before throwing their once beloved pet out with the trash. In the 7 years I was in your country, I picked up many dogs, and not just on the sea wall. The ones that stand out in my memory are few, but there were so many which pulled at my heartstrings. Was it you who dumped your dog behind the jetty leaving its face to be eaten by maggots. Was it you who tied five-day-old puppies in a plastic bag and dumped them in the storm drain.(same place). Was it you who was working a blind horse or the one that had rotten feet with no shoes on, or was it you who dragged your dog to death on the ECD? You all know who you are, so I say, shame on you! Guyana desperately needs more people like Syeada Manbodh; I’ve known her to go out during the night to rescue an animal. I used to take my rescues home in the last two years I was in Guyana, even a horse and a donkey, the latter of which now belongs to Laurie Lewis who gave Maxie a wonderful home. The bottom line is if you don’t want your animal any more, there is a place to take them, and that’s the GSPCA on Robb St, Bourda, Tel 226 4237. They will even humanely euthanise large animals at a small cost and arrange for disposal. I’m sick of knowing that the practice of straying still goes on in Guyana; however there is a solution: Sterilize your pets please!
