Malteenoes wins Hafeez memorial match

A fine all-round performance by Stephen Jacobs carried Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) to victory over the American Cricket Society (ACS) cricket team from New York, United States of America in the third annual Nizam Hafeez memorial cricket match at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground yesterday.

Hafeez was a member of the Malteenoes Sports Club before migrating to the USA.

He represented ACS before his untimely demise in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11 2001.

Umpires Eddie Nichols and Linden Mathews reduced the match to 30-overs-a-side because of a late start.

Malteenoes won the toss and batted scoring 164 in their allotted overs. Imran Hassan top scored with 55 including three fours and two sixes while Jacobs struck three fours and two sixes scoring 45. The pair put on 85 for the second wicket.

Delroy Jacobs chipped in with 27 which included two sixes and a four.

The ACS team is made up of several players who represented Guyana at the youth level including Terry Hastoo, Joseph Harriman, Tony Roberts, Sase Singh, and Vinoo Solomon.

Two other players Karran Ganesh captained the national U-15 team and Zamin Amin, who represented Guyana at the U-19 level, was captain of the United States team for many years.

The tourists put up a gallant fight but were dismissed for 152. Kumar Ramsabaad led the visitors with 39 including five fours while Sunesh Wazid struck two fours and a six contributing 26. Stephen Jacobs completed his man-of-the-match winning performance picking up four wickets for 34 runs.

The visitors will take on Enmore today then travel to Berbice to do battle with Chesney on Monday. On Wednesday they are scheduled to play Everest, before taking on the Georgetown Cricket Club next Saturday.
