Annual Mayor’s Cup Football tourney to kick off Jan. 26

The Annual Mayor’s Cup Football tournament will kick off on January 26 with a double header at the GFC ground, Bourda.

According to coordinator Lennox Arthur, the tournament should have been played last November, but because Guyana was at the time hosting Group `H’ matches of the Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament; he was forced to reschedule the start.

Arthur said he got verbal approval from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) for the staging of the tournament and is optimistic that written approval will be granted.

Over $1M in prize money will be up for grabs.

The winning team will receive $500,000, while the second to fourth place finishers will collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.

According to Arthur, Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green is assisting in securing sponsorship for the 20th annual tournament.

Club teams from Georgetown, East Coast, East Bank, West Demerara, Linden and Berbice will be competing in this year’s tournament.

According to the fixtures supplied by Arthur, a Young Achievers/Beavers combination will face Mocha Champs in the opening match on January 26, while the feature game brings together Cari Air Western Tigers and Buxton United.

The following day, Black Stallion is down to face Beacon and Golden Grove is pitted against GDF.

On January 28, Uitvlugt meets Melanie and Den Amstel comes up against Santos.

On January 31, Rusal meets GFC and Camptown is to face Uprising.
