Sport Letter

Dear Editor,

I’m reading your sports section, dated the 13th January, 2007. I must somewhat agree with the sentiments expressed in the article headlined “Race for Sports Coach of the Year heading for photo-finish.”

However, I must disagree with the absence of Mr Leslie Black, whose name I did not see mentioned in the article along with the other coaches.

Mr Black has done a lot for athletics, not only during 2006 but over the past 16 years. In 2006, he guided Alika Morgan to the Caricom 10Km Championship. She was also runner-up in the South American 10Km race in Suriname and in Guyana. Morgan has lots of other outstanding performances around the Caribbean and seems to be the athlete for the future. Black also coach-ed Kelvin Johnson who has a few outstanding performances including winning the Suriname marathon in December 2006 not to mention athletes like Cleaveland Forde and Reonna Cornette.

Sir, I will like to say to the persons who have the duty to select the sports awardees to remember Mr. Black for what he has done for Athletics in Guyana.

I am one of those persons who think this is overdue. I do hope the Director of Sports, Mr Neil Kumar and the other panel members will see it fit to award the man who spends hours with athletes.

Yours faithfully,

Linden Johnson
