Continental Cycle Club honours Max Perreira and Marlis Archer

Continental Cycle Club will honour two of its former members who died tragically last year with three major activities.

The club will host a memorial service, a mini-exhibition and a road race in honour of founder-member and former president Max Perreira and former secretary, Marlis Archer, who were gunned down outside of their Bel-Air Park home last year.

The programme was expected to get underway with a memorial church service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam, yesterday.

The next event will be a mini-exhibition of the Club’s memorabilia of past and current cyclists at 105 Duncan Street, Bel Air Park, tomorrow starting at 16:30 hours.

The week of activities will climax with a 10-race cycle event around the outer circuit of the National Park on Sunday starting at 10:00 hours.

President of the club Cheryl Thompson disclosed that it was a fitting tribute to Perreira and Archer who were very active in the club and who held the positions of president and secretary at the time of their deaths.

Thompson also disclosed that the Club is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and wanted to highlight its achievements.

The club has produced several leading local cyclists including John Charles, Wayne DeAbreau, and among its young cadres are Geron Williams, Scott Savoury and Enzo Matthews who performed creditably for Guyana at the recently held Caribbean Junior Cycling Champion-ships in Barbados.

Sunday’s race programme will attract most of the country’s top cyclists who will compete for cash prizes and hampers.

The day’s programme will get underway with a junior and juvenile five-lap event followed by a seven-lap race for category one, two, three, and four riders.

Veterans Under-45 and Over-45 will compete in separate three-lap events while the Open Mountain Bike race will also be three laps.

There will be BMX 9-12 years, BMX 12-14 years and BMX girls’ Open and all three events will be of one lap each.

The feature race will be over ten laps and is expected to be a gruelling event with five prime, point prizes at stages in addition to prizes for the top finishers.

The first event will pedal off at 10:00 hours.
