Stage set for QC sports tomorrow

With all systems in place for the Queen’s College annual Track and Field Champion-ships, the question at the back of everyone’s head is whether Wholly (H) House can gain its fourth consecutive victory. Last year `H’ House scored a runaway victory beating its nearest competitor by more than one hundred points.

This year’s championships, which will be held at the Georgetown Cricket Club’s Bourda ground, promise to be both memorable and exhilarating.

The level of competition is expected to be at its peak as a result of fierce rivalries between top athletes some of whom will be running for their last time at this level and a competitive and fun-filled day of sports is anticipated.

To date, Wholly House have retained the standard trials shield after convincingly winning last week’s event with 238 points.

They were followed by Cunningham (K) House with 180 points and Moulder (G) House with a unexpected third place finish of 165 points.

Pilgrim (E) House have emerged as field champions with a total of 79 points at the conclusion of the field events held yesterday at the Queen’s College ground. `E’ House edged Percival (A) House (75) by five points, while Raleigh (B) House was just five points behind in 3rd position.

Wholly House has been known for producing many talented athletes in recent times and this year is no different. Their win streak began in 2004 when former house captain Daniel Ram along with Myron Tucker guided `H’ House to victory as a farewell present. Coincidently, their exit ushered in the one of Guyana’s most talented junior sprinters in Carlwyn Collins.

Collins has amassed more than 15 gold medals from his three inter-house sports appearances. He has made two appearances at the National Schools Athletics Championships where he holds two records (400m & 200m under-14) and has been a member of many of QC’s senior relay team even before reaching his fifteenth birthday. He will be contesting the 100m, 200m and 400m events in the U-16 age-group along with all 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

Lloyden Layne of Cunningham (K) House, will be looking to successful defend his 100m title and regain his 200m title after being dethroned in a stunning upset by Storme Moore 12 months ago. Janel Davis of Durban (D)House and Kersee Welch of Wholly (H)House, who have met countless times before, will be going head-to-head in the 100, 200 and 400m events to settle their intense rivalry once and for all as this will be their final appearances at the sports.

Action on the track will begin at about 09:30hrs immediately following the opening ceremony and march past. Meanwhile, Bishops High School, Saints Stanislaus College and St John’s College will have their inter house sports at different venues today. Tenisha Punch of St John’s College should not have a problem securing a clean sweep of the 100m and 200m while up and coming middle distance prospect Devaun Barrington, is likely to win the 800, 1500, and 3000m in his age category at the meet.

A substantial number of athletes from Bishops have recently left school, but their inter house championships will still be exciting as a new brigade led by Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) and CAC Under-9 athlete Arenzie Chance will strut their stuff.
