Four straight for Wooley House

Despite the change of venue, the Queen’s College Inter-House athletics championships was a huge success as their star athletes illuminated the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda yesterday with shining performances.

And, Wolley (H) House conquered the other nine houses winning by the largest margin of their four-year reign. Just as last year, ‘H’ House claimed the first and the last race of the day and almost every other one in between, thanks to the determined spirit of house mistress Fazia Baskh, who made sure that the house was represented in every event.

House captain Kersee Welch led by example as she won all of her events to end her athletic career at the college in grand style. Welch won the 100, 200 and 400m and led her team to victory in the 4x 100m open relay.

Lloyden Layne, who is also in his final year at the college, silenced all discussions of an upset in the male open 100m when he blew away the entire field for the first 90 metres and acknowledged the crowd’s appreciation for the remaining ten metres.

15-year-old sprint sensation Carlwyn Collins, left the spectators breathless every time he took the track and with good reason, as he annihilated the entire field in the 100, 200 and 400m winning by remarkable margins in the latter two. Collins also anchored the U-16 4×400 team to victory, settled for second in the 4x100m relay falling flat on his face after he banked one of the tracks sharp bend at an uncontrollable speed.

The female teacher’s race proved to be the most entertaining event of the day when Industrial Arts teacher Rhonda Jones ran away from her staff mates, while the crowd came out on the track behind them.

The final point standings are: Wooley House, 524 points, B House, 391 points,

Nobbs (L) House, 349. Fourth and fifth positions were occupied by Pilgrim (E) House with 336 points and Cunningham (K) House with 329 points respectively.

The remaining five positions went to (G) Moulder, Percival House (A), D’urban House (D), Austin House (C) and Weston (F) in that order.
