Guyana’s Markember Pierre beaten by Hungarian

Guyana’s middleweight Beijing Olympic Games hopeful Markember Pierre crashed out of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships in Chicago, United States of America (USA) when he lost to a Hungarian fighter 7-23 yesterday.

Pierre was the third Guyanese boxer in action at the championships after Bantamweight boxer Clive Atwell and junior welterweight Hendrick Pelswijk who were in action on Tuesday at the University of Illinois.

Pelswijk, who defeated his opponent from El Salvador by a 25-7 margin will be in action tomorrow.

Atwell was eliminated after losing to a boxer from Mongolia 8-24.

The championships have attracted approximately 700 boxers from over 120 countries.
