Rugby action switches from France to Guyana

With the Rugby World Cup just ended in France the action will now switch to Guyana for the eagerly anticipated one-off match between arch-rivals Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago Over 35s on Saturday at the National Park rugby field.

Like world champions South Africa, the Guyanese line-up will be looking for more success against the Trinidadians whom they have beaten in two successive engagements in as many years at the National Park.

The local players have been hard at training for the past month and a half and are eagerly awaiting the annual showdown against their opponents who will be looking to turn around their fortunes this time round.

The visitors who are expected to arrive in Guyana tomorrow will have a practice session at the National Park tomorrow afternoon and according to local rugby officials, several of the players are expected to take part in Carib Rugby Club’s Sevens tournament on Sunday.

Saturday’s match will be played in four quarters with the first two quarters being of 20-minute durations, while the final two will be of 10 minutes duration each.

Alton Agard will lead the Guyana side which is being coached by national coach Sherlock Solomon.

The other players named in the squad are: Curtis Jacobs, Peter Campayne, Conrad Arjoon, Bartram Taylor, William “Billy” Blackman, Vernon Duncan, Troy Yhip, Stuart May, Terrance Mc Almont, Chris O’ Donaghue, Wesley Licorish, Robin Roberts, Alex King, Kenneth Grant-Stewart, Stephen Butcher, Leonardo Butcher, Gregory Wills, Alair George, Ray Warren, and Noel Adonis.

The manager is Terrance Grant.

The two referees are David Hinckson of Trinidad and Tobago and George David of the United States.
