Big money at stake in Alness horse race meet

Over 600,000 dollars will be at stake in three feature races when the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club stages its grand day of horse racing today.

The meet was originally scheduled for last week-end but the inclement weather forced the shift to tomorrow at the Alness Club, Corentyne, Berbice.

The C and Lower class will be the marquee event of the day with 272,000 dollars and a trophy donated by the Ansa McAl Group of companies up for grabs. Competitors will go head-to-head over a distance of just about 1550 metres with three-year-old Little Panie leading the charge against Demur Gold, Bashra, Fairy Tale Romance and new import Great Memory.

The two-year-old Guyana and West Indian Bred Stakes will see just about 178,000 dollars at stake with horses like Gap and Sasha from the Naljit Stables among the leading contenders.

Also factoring in this race will be I. Dipnarine’s Show-ing Up who will have to do just that to stave off the fast improving Bad News from the Robinson Stables. Other contenders include Bounty Flyer, Choice Return, Lucky Gold, Fiesta and Sharda.

The other major race of the day will see several horses vying for the Ramroop Enterprises trophy and 160,000 dollars.

Among the leading contenders in this race are Bashra from the Crawford Stables, Right Decision from Jagdeo Stables and Fairy Tale Romance coming out of the Jumbo Jet Stables.
