Ansa Mc Al Twenty20 competition… MSC coasts to easy win over GCC

A blazing half-century from Shemroy Barrington led Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) to a nine-wicket victory over Georgetown Cricket Club in their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Pepsi/ Ansa McAl-sponsored national Twenty/20 first-division match played at the MSC ground yesterday.

Barrington celebrated his call-up to the Demerara senior squad to contest the Inter-County three-day competition which starts next week-end, with a masterful 65 from 31 balls that was decorated with six fours and five sixes.

He reached his 50 from only 19 deliveries as MSC reached 121-1 in just 14.2 overs in reply to GCC’s 118-9 from their 20 overs.

Barrington posted 84 for the first wicket with West Indies Under-19 captain Steven Jacobs, who also reached his 50 with the winning shot of the match, a straight hit for six off Ricardo Jadunauth.

Jacobs faced 34 balls and struck four fours and three sixes.

None of the GCC bowlers with the exception of Neil Mc Garrell who bowled his four overs for a mere nine runs were spared the wrath of the MSC opening pair. After Ravi Sarwan brother of injured West Indies and Guyana captain Ramnaresh Sarwan bowled a maiden over to kick start the MSC innings, Barrington then went to work plundering 23 off the second over of his team’s innings bowled by Gavin Singh.

To add insult to injury, former West Indies fast bowler Reon King was then struck for 13 runs from his second over with Barrington striking him over mid wicket for a six then hitting the following delivery through the backward square region for four, before Jadunauth who was struck for a six the previous delivery, saw Mc Garrell run from first slip to deep backward square to hold onto a one handed catch off Barrington.

Earlier, GCC were unable to get the MSC slower bowlers away in their total of 118-9 with Gavin Singh’s 20 being the top score. Singh faced 18 deliveries and struck two fours in his innings. He received support from Paul Bevaun (18; 15 balls 2×4 1×6), Mc Garrell (15; 12 balls 1×6 1×4) and Sarwan (15; 13 balls 2×4) against the bowling of Jacobs (2-7), Lennox Cush (2-19) and Damion Van Tull (2-15) for MSC. Scores: GCC 118-9 MSC 121-1 14.2 overs.

GNIC win by four runs

At Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground Bourda, the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) defeated Police Sports Club (PSC) by four runs in a nail biting finish in their fixture.

Asked to take first strike in a game reduced to 15 overs a side due to the authorities of the GCC requesting the ground by 4:30 pm, GNIC reached 100 all out from 14.5 overs with Shawn De Souza 29 (4×4) and Martin Rajmangal 26 (3×4) being the principal scorers. Bowling for PSC Fitzroy Culley (3-17) and Jason Heyliger (3-18) were the principal wicket takers.

Everest defeats TSC by 22 runs

At the Everest Cricket Club ground, the home team led by a defiant 58 from veteran David Harper, who also took 1-15, defeated Transport Sports Club (TSC) by 22 runs in their fixture.

Asked to take first strike after losing the toss, Everest reached 127-6 from their 20 overs. Harper, who was given three lives by the TSC fielders during his stay at the crease, faced 37 balls and struck seven fours and one six. He received considerable support from S. Heeralall who batted through his team’s innings to compile 35 from 55 balls. Bowling for TSC, Kelon Carmichael who was unlucky not to be selected for the Demerara team to contest the upcoming Inter county competition took 3-13 whilst there was a wicket each for Kevin Ross (1-16) and Terrence Poole (1-14).

TSC in reply crumbled for 105 despite a defiant 41 from Travis Blyden. Blyden who had struck an unbeaten 105 (9×4; 5×6) off 59 balls in his teams 197-5 from 18 overs in their last outing against GNIC, continued his fine run of form facing 32 balls and striking three fours during his stay at the wicket. Offering support to Blyden was Rodwin Clarke who made 23 from 14 balls with one four and two sixes, but no other batsmen were able to withstand the Everest bowlers with Sauid Drepaul claiming 3-21 supported by Troy Gonsalves 2-10. There was a wicket each for Leon Scott (1-13), Harper (1-15) and left arm spinner S. Raganandan who opened the bowling 1-25. Scores: Everest 127-6 TSC 102 all out.
